It's been more than seven years since Hurricane Floyd's floodwaters severely damaged Johnson Chapel Primitive Baptist Church of Tarboro. And yesterday, Pastor Donnie Atkinson finally helped volunteers raise the first framed wall of the church.
The North Carolina Baptist Men, with help from local church volunteers, began constructing the church yesterday from the concrete slab on up.
In September 1999, Floyd's floodwaters warped the church's floors and moved the sanctuary off its foundation. Since then, the members have met in a building in Pinetops.
Though the Baptist Men have started construction, Atkinson is still fundraising. He says the church needs about 25-thousand dollars more items such as for air-conditioning units and pews.
Atkinson calls the rebuilding his best Christmas present ever.
