Message in a Bottle Washes Ashore Outer Banks

A Southern Shores couple is on a mission to find the family of a Navy sailor whose message in a hair tonic bottle was found on an Outer Banks beach. Sandy Midgett says she and her husband have tried to find family members without success. The bottle was buried in sand at Nags Head and exposed by erosion from a recent storm. The note was rolled tightly and pushed into a green "Wildroot Cream Oil" bottle. It appears the writer was aboard the Navy oiler Chipola in Norfolk, Virginia a half century ago. The message was dated June 29th, 1951 and signed by Earl G. Brenkman. It said only, "Norfolk Bay, Norfolk, Virginia, on July 21st, will be underway for Greenland, our next port of call."
