A small group of employees representing workers who walked off jobs at a slaughterhouse have met with company officials.
About a-thousand nonunion workers at the Smithfield Foods plant in Tar Heel walked off the job last week. Many of them were Hispanic, and they were upset that the company fired workers fo allegedly providing false identification information.
Smithfield officials said it stressed during yesterday's meeting that it can't keep illegal immigrants on the payroll. But the fired workers have 60 days to provide proper identification documents.
he company has said about 500 to 600 workers were found to have unverifiable information. The plant in Tar Heel slaughters about 32-thousand hogs a day.
