Former Army Private Indicted In Rape, Murder Of Iraqi Teen

A former 101st Airborne Division soldier was indicted Thursday in the rape and murder of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and the slayings of three others in her family last March.

Former Army Private Steven D- Green was arrested June 30th near Asheville. He's been charged in a federal indictment with murder
and aggravated sexual assault. The Justice Department says that if convicted, Green could face
the death penalty.

The attack occurred on March 12th in Mahmoudiya, Iraq, a village about 20 miles south of Baghdad, where Green was stationed with the division's 502nd Infantry Regiment.

The indictment alleges that Green and others raped a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and burned her body to conceal their crimes. The indictment also alleges that Green and four others stationed at a checkpoint nearby killed the girl, her father, mother and 6-year-old sister.
