Authorities are investigating the death of a Camp Lejeune Marine whose body was found in a new subdivision in the eastern part of Onslow County.
The sheriff’s department says the cause of the man’s death is under investigation, and that an autopsy is planned for later today.
A spokesman for the department says investigators are treating the death as a homicide until more information becomes available. The victim’s identity is being withheld until next of kin are notified.
An employee of the Army Corps of Engineers doing some work in the new subdivision called authorities at about 3:15 p.m. yesterday after spotting the Marine on the ground next to a vehicle on an unpaved road. The victim had been shot in the head.
