University Study Llinks Race, Income With N.C. Landfill Locations

A new study says North Carolina communities with black, Hispanic or another minority residents are more likely to be near a landfill than those that are largely white white.

An epidemiology professor at U-N-C Chapel Hill presented the
findings today to a legislative committee that's supposed to
evaluate the impact of landfills on minority groups and the poor.

Professor Steven Wing said that North Carolina communities with
significant minority populations are more than twice as likely to
live near a landfill compared to overwhelmingly white areas.

A co-chairman of the Joint Select Committee on Environmental
Justice says the issues presented in the study will be debated
later.
