Monday Marks 23rd Anniversary of the Beirut Bombing

Monday marks the 23rd Anniversary of the Beirut bombing that claimed the lives of over 200 U.S. troops, many of them Marines based at Camp Lejeune as part of the 24th Marine Amphibious Unit. To honor those killed on October 23, 1983 and observe the anniversary, a memorial service was held at the Beirut Memorial in Jacksonville. Military veterans and current Marines, Sailors and Soldiers participated in the service. Many classify the Beirut bombing as the first terrorist attack on the United States. Those that were in Beirut, just feet from where the bombing occurred, say the names on the memorial wall stir intense emotions. U.S. troops were stationed in Beirut at the time for a peace keeping mission, at the request of the Lebanese government.
