Local National Guard Soldier To Receive Silver Star

A North Carolina National Guard soldier will receive the Silver Star for his courage during a dangerous combat operation in Iraq.

National Guard officials say Sergeant First Class Chad M-
Stephens will receive the medal on Sunday during a ceremony in
Jacksonville.

The Silver Star Medal is awarded to Army soldiers for
distinguished bravery in combat.

According to the citation for the medal, Stephens led his
platoon in heavy combat with enemy fighters attempting to control
the city of Baqubah in June 2004.

Stephens is a platoon sergeant with Alpha Company, 1st
Battalion, 120th Infantry.
