Pulmonologists, or lung doctors, estimate nearly half of everyone living in Eastern Carolina is affected by some form of pulmonary disease. Doctors say one of the reasons respiratory health in Eastern Carolina is so poor is the region's high percentage of smokers and the prevalence of crops that emit a significant amount of dust when farmed. But there are tests that can show you just how healthy your lungs are. Spirometry tests gage lung performance by calculating the amount of air the lungs can hold and the rate air can be inhaled and exhaled. An event Saturday morning, a run for respiration, is aiming to raise awareness in the community on the importance of health lungs. Local doctors say while the community may be aware of lung disease, the level of importance people place on them is typically low. The race begins Saturday morning at 8:30 near the entrance of Lynncroft Shopping Center.
