Marine Fisheries Director to Retire

You may not know his name, but Preston Pate Junior, a Greene County native, has been shaping the state of North Carolina's Marine Fisheries for nearly a decade. Pate, who now lives in the Carteret County town of Newport, has announced he will retire in February. As director of the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries, Pate is responsible for regulating the state's one billion dollar saltwater fishing industry. And that's no small job. North Carolina has over 4,000 miles of shoreline, thousands of full-time commercial fishermen and 2,000,000 recreational anglers. The department has started a search for Pate's replacement.
