A prison in Eastern Carolina is short staffed and administrators say while they make it work, they're stretched. Hyde Correctional Institution in Hyde County is short nearly 40 corrections officers and Wayne Talbert, superintendent of the facility, says part of the problem is where the prison is located. While having a prison located in a rural area like Hyde lessens the chance of inmates escaping, prison officials say that same location makes it difficult to attract workers. To compensate for the staffing shortage, administrators say some of the officers work overtime and work on their days off.
