Marine biologists at the University of North Carolina Wilmington are investigating the death of a small sperm whale found at Topsail Island.
The Star-News of Wilmington reported that the 7-foot whale was found Sunday on the beach at Surf City. It was not immediately clear whether the animal was a pygmy or dwarf sperm whale.
UNC-Wilmington marine biologist Ann Pabst says the small sperm whales are the most commonly stranded type in North Carolina other
than bottlenose dolphins.
Pabst says the whale showed no sign of injury, such as an open wound or entanglement in fishing gear.
She says the body has been moved to the school, where it will remain frozen until a necropsy is performed.
