$40-Million Student Housing Complex Slated For Downtown Greenville

Work on five story $40 million state of the art student housing complex in downtown Greenville will soon get underway.

Greenville city officials say the new student housing project has been in the making for downtown Greenville for eight years. Demolition of old buildings will start next week to make way for the project.

Tom Taft is one of the investors and says the five story state of the art student housing complex near ECU will cover one city block of downtown with housing, restaurants and shopping.

Taft says, "There will be outside dining, outside seating. There will be three courtyards in the project, one of which will have a swimming pool, another will have volleyball courts. It's really going to be an exciting project for Greenville and for East Carolina University."

In addition to the 12-thousand square foot project, Taft says there will also be a 430 spot parking deck and enough housing for over 500 people.

Economic development manager Carl Rees says much of the project will be paid for by real estate loans and possible incentives by the city.

Rees says they plan to have some of the units available for students to move in by 2014 and to have the entire project completed by fall of 2015.
