Hurricane Fran slammed into Eastern Carolina with 115 mile per hour winds on September 6, 1996, killing 34 people, leaving 4.5 million people without power, and causing more than $1.2 billion in damage. Onslow County was one of the hardest hit by Fran. Emergency management officials in Onslow County say they are much better prepared today than they were 10 years ago to deal with such a devastating storm. In addition to being prepared for hurricanes, and possible disease outbreaks, Onslow County plans to be tsunami ready by October.
