A Duplin County man can thank his parachute for saving his life after his experimental airplane crashed into the ocean off of Topsail Island.
Coast Guard officials say Floyd Brown of Chinquapin in Duplin County was doing aerobatic maneuvers in his plane, when the engine just fell out of the aircraft. Brown had to parachute out of the plane, and landed in the ocean where he was picked up by local boaters. Brown had no injuries. His Christen Eagle II airplane sank in about 34 feet of water. No word on why the engine fell out of the plane.
