Records Show Dozens Have Died in Adult Care Homes In North Carolina

State officials argue they're doing the best they can with policies and procedures already in place. Still family members of victim's who have lost loved ones in the care of licensed adult care homes say policies that are in place don't sufficiently protect residents from things like accidental death. Jerome Crawford of Rocky Mount lost his brother Eddie when he suffocated in his own vomit, according to records with the State Medical Examiner's office. Eddie Crawford's death was ruled accidental, but the home was fined $3,000 because the penalty review committee found the facility failed to administer C.P.R. as directed by rescue officials before they arrived on scene. By law, adult care homes are not required to have liability insurance.
