We've been reporting on the switch to digital television it for quite awhile. The change happens on February 17th. But another digital deadline is also looming.

The U.S. Coast Guard wants boaters to switch their analog radio beacons, known as EPIRBS, to digital beacons.

As of February 1st the Coast Guard will only receive distress alerts on a digital frequency. Officials say these new digital beacons are 50 times more powerful, and also provide a more accurate search for rescue crews.

The Coast Guard says the registration information will now allow them to call the owner and see if they are really in distress, preventing unnecessary searches and saving tax dollars.

The Coast Guard says you can purchase or order these new beacons from marina's across the east.
