Congressman Walter B. Jones introduced a bill today that would redesignate the Department of the Navy as the Department of the Navy and Marine Corps. Since 2001, Jones has introduced legislation aimed at making the United States Marine Corps an official branch of the military.

Current legislation has the Marine Corps as a service within the Navy.

Jones says, “This legislation is not about changing the responsibilities of the secretary, reallocating resources between the Navy and Marine Corps or altering the course of their missions. Rather, it is about showing the nation the true meaning of the department and recognizing the overall importance of the Marine Corps to our national security."

Dear Congressman Walter B. Jones it appears that you are confused. The Marine Corps is part of the Department of the United States Navy. It will never be it own department. There will never be a Department of the Navy and Seabees, or Department of the NAVY and Seals. If the Congressman continues to persist I will make a recommendation to the United States Army to accept responsibility for the Marine Corps and make them part of the Department of the Army, Marine Corps. Obviously this congressman does not understand that the Marines are part of the Navy. This congressman needs to be investigated for wasting the hard earned tax dollars of the taxpayers. They graduate of the United States Navy Academy. Not the United States Marine Corps Academy. Respectfully, USN SPECOM 1972-1993

It is time to worry about more important things than changing a name! We hear enough about my fellow brothers at arms and I dont think making the Corps a seperate branch will do anything for the Corps or the rest of the US. Time to look into issues that matter that this time in the world.

Is this why he thinks he is in office? We have real issues in NC and nationwide and he wants to introduce legislation to change a name? We are all very aware of the mission and importance of both the Navy and Marine Corps. There is absolutely no need to change tradition or titles for the simple minded individuals that may not be up to speed on the association and/or differences between the Navy and Marine Corps. If Walter B. Jones actually knew anything about it, he would know why the Marines are considered 'The Department of the Navy'. To Wow; The Marines are 'an official branch'. This is simple 'hair splitting' by an idiotic politician. To Walter B. Jones...Find something important to do or go home and let someone else do the job! Leave Tradition that you know nothing about ALONE! VBush, USMC.

It is technically a department of the Navy...the Men's department!

I did not know that the Marine Corps was not an "official branch of the military!" We hear so much more about the Marines than Navy, Air Force, Army. They should be recognized.
