OBX Museum To Honor Black Rescuers

A new living history museum is planned for the Outer Banks dedicated to African Americans who saved shipwreck victims along the coast. A structure that once served as the cookhouse for the Pea Island Lifesaving Station in Rodanthe, and was moved to Manteo last winter, will be part of the museum. The Pea Island Lifesaving Station was the only all black unit in the old U.S. Lifesaving Service. A $10,000 grant from Dominion North Carolina will help in the construction of the heritage center.
