In Craven County, New Bern police are cracking down on the problem with a new kind of summer school.
In a roundup called "Operation Summer School" that began before sunrise, more than 20 New Bern police officers arrested 26 suspects on felony charges, most of them for drug possession or sale.
Authorities say nearly all of the suspects arrested are involved in gangs in and around New Bern. Standing in front of the suspects' pictures, New Bern Police Chief Frank Palombo says he hopes the operation will reduce gang activity by discouraging new recruits.
Palombo said, "Operation Summer School is the first phase of a long-term plan to eradicate gangs from New Bern.”
Police have made more than 130 arrests during the past month.
