Surprising and enlightening. Just two of the words East Carolina University student Joel Carter used to describe his recent visit to Israel. Carter, an Army veteran, was selected from a handful of students across the country to visit the war-torn country, on behalf of the Foundation for The Defense of Democracy. During his trip, Carter had a chance to speak with terrorist victims, Israeli intelligence officers and tour holy sites throughout the country. Carter said, "What surprised me the most is just seeing the defiance of the Israeli population, just against terrorism. The resiliency. They've been fighting for years and years and yet they're unified and still fighting." As part of being selected to participate in the program, Carter agreed to hold a series of forums and educate other ECU students on terrorism issues.
