Seventeen-year-old Timothy Oakley died Monday after fighting for his life for ten days following a car accident in Ayden. Oakley had been a Winterville Junior Firefighter for two years and just this summer joined the town's E.M.S. program. The Ayden-Grifton High School Senior had a dream of being the first to ride the department's new fire truck, which was brought to Winterville only four days before he died. The Winterville Fire Department granted his wish. That new fire engine transported Oakley's casket to the Winterville cemetery. Though Oakley was a Junior Firefighter, he was given full honors at his funeral. 22 fire trucks participated in his precession and bagpipes played while Oakley's family was presented with the American flag.
