For the first time in three decades, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Raleigh, which includes Eastern Carolina, has a new bishop. Michael Burbidge was installed Friday. He replaces retiring Bishop Joseph Gossman, who has been head of the Raleigh Diocese since May 1975. Burbidge was appointed by Pope Benedict. The Raleigh Diocese is in charge of Roman Catholic Churches that have more than 186,000 members in 54 counties of central and Eastern North Carolina. The rest of North Carolina falls under the supervision of the Diocese of Charlotte.
