A heat wave can be a danger to anyone, but it can be especially dangerous to people without a cool home or without any home at all. The Greenville Homeless Shelter typically comes close to filling all 78 of its available beds, especially during dangerously hot weather. With people dying from the heat elsewhere in the nation, shelter management say they are concerned about helping as many area homeless people as possible. Some of the shelter's residents who were escaping Tuesday’s potentially deadly temperatures were thankful to have a place to escape the heat for awhile. The Greenville Shelter staff estimates the Pitt County homeless population to be between 500 and 1,000.
