A potentially explosive discovery at a home in New Bern Thursday. An explosive device was found in the attic of a home new residents were moving into. New Bern police say around 4:30 PM they responded to 1608 Trent Road concerning a possible explosive. The Cherry Point bomb squad was called in and worked a couple of hours to dismantle the device. While that was going on, several streets in the area between Fort Totten Road and the 1600 block of Trent Road were blocked off. The new homeowners weren't there when the discovery was made by some workers. Police say It was not a homemade device and was not a device that was set to go off. It wasn't somebody planning it. It was a military style ordinance. The device was taken to Cherry Point where it will be evaluated. Police say they will work with the home's former owner to try and figure out how the explosive got in the attic.
