There's new information that the Bertie County School System's financial woes may be far from over. After reading over a recently released special audit ordered by the school system, Bertie County attorney Lloyd Smith says he's reached some disturbing conclusions. Smith says possible fraudulent charges such as embezzlement might rise out of this recent independent audit.
The current chairman of the school board was present at the meeting when Smith gave his opinion, and said he commends the commissioners decision to refer this information in the audit to the State Bureau of Investigation. The S.B.I. could then recommend whether the district attorney should file charges.
