Preventing Tick-Borne Illnesses

More and more people are developing tick-borne illnesses right in their own backyards.
Experts say most tick-borne infections occur in warmer months, but in areas like eastern Carolina, ticks can be a threat year round.

Prevention is the only way to avoid illness.

Experts like North Carolina State University entomologist Dr. Charles Apperson, recommend using a repellent, such as a deet-based product on exposed skin and Permethrin, an insecticide, on clothing.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever is most common in North Carolina and can be fatal if left untreated.
