Troopergate Panel: Palin Abused Power Save Email Print

A legislative committee investigating Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has found she unlawfully abused her authority in firing the state's public safety commissioner.

The investigative report concludes that a family grudge wasn't the sole reason for firing Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan but says it likely was a contributing factor.

The Republican vice presidential nominee has been accused of firing a commissioner to settle a family dispute. Palin supporters have called the investigation politically motivated.

Monegan says he was dismissed as retribution for resisting pressure to fire a state trooper involved in a bitter divorce with the governor's sister. Palin says Monegan was fired as part of a legitimate budget dispute.

Previous Story

Alaska lawmakers are expected to release an ethics report into Gov. Sarah Palin's firing of her public safety commissioner today, but some Republicans say it's being rushed in order to damage John McCain's presidential campaign.

Palin has been accused of firing the state's Public Safety Commissioner, after pressuring him to fire a state trooper involved in a nasty divorce with the governor's sister. The report is also expected to touch on Palin's husband Todd's involvement.

Members of a legislative committee reviewing the matter have been meeting behind closed doors today and had to sign a confidentiality agreement before being allowed to read the report.

One of those lawmakers, Republican Peggy Wilson, wonders whether the committee is rushing to a conclusion, saying she's barely had time to read the report. It's estimated to be 300 pages long, with 1,000 pages of supporting documents.

Did anyone notice that the Palin bunch "cleared" her of any wrongdoing? This was a day before the Alaska committee released its report. Now, the state said she violated ethics rules, but did nothing criminally. As much as I dislike Gov. Caribou, I can agree nothing criminal happened, just a morally and ethically challenged governor & VP candidate doing business as usual in politics. Wonder if she and Todd learned all they know in their ultra-conservative church? I guess their religion doesn't stress morals or ethics. Hmmmm.

To WITN moderator---I certainly agree that we must be civil, but freedom of expression need also be allowed. I have no problem with someone calling me a racist if he so thinks that I am. I respect his RIGHT to his opinion, even if I disagree with his opinion. Why would you not allow a post that questions soomeone's claim to be a Christian? I say that someone that is pro-abortion and claims that it is a punishment for someone to have to carry a baby to term because of her lack of morals had better get on his/her knees and ask GOD for enlightenment. GOD is sovereign, mankind is HIS creation, not the other way around. Cursing and threatening someone is not acceptable behavior in these posts, but wanting people to be "nice" stifles the flow of intellligent dissent and debate.

Bubba-

We endeavor to post based on whether a post is suitable, not based on whether it fits the moderator's personal opinions. If you infer that either McCain or Obama an idiot, we'll post it. If you call either major party candidate a terrorist or infer that either candidate is not a Christian (because both profess to be Christians), we will reject the post. We also will reject posts that use any inappropriate language.

We encourage banter among posters but will reject posts that "call out" other posters. We want everyone to "be nice!"

REPUBLICIANS HELP SAVE BARACKS OBAMA'S AFRICIAN BROTHER - George Obama, Barach Obama's brother lives in a hut in a ramshackle town of Huruma on the outskirts of Nairobi in Kenya, Africa. He is 26 and lives on $12 a year. That is 3 cents a day. His own flesh and blood has turned his back on him so it is up to us, the good people of America, to help this man out. We would also like to point out what a difference a country makes. One of the Obamas was born in America and lives in a million dollar house has made over $20 million in the last three years. George Obama was born in Africa, lives in hut and makes only 1 dollar a month. He needs a hand up and with your help we are going to give it to him. Barack has not, and never helped his brother out of poverty. Republicians pray For George. The Illinois senator mentions his brother in his autobiography, describing him in just one passing paragraph as a "beautiful boy with a rounded head". Please print this George needs our help. Thank you

Hmm, Where is the Dem outrage at Barney Frank, Chris Dod, and the host of others that abused power and led us into this financial mess? Call a spade a spade...or am I being a racist? Obama can insult Palin but if we call him what he is, an unqualified political machine product w/ connections to Domestic Terrorists and had his hand in the cookie jar as our banks go belly up, we are evil whites. What would have happened is McCain's political career started off at a KKK fundraiser? You think the media would let that go? The media is drunk with the idea of an African American in office...never mind that he is not qualified to lead this country and has a dubious track record when making simple choices like who is his friend (Wright, Ayers etc etc) McCain Palin 08

I want somebody in the White House who WILL expose the crooks for this financial meltdown. McCain will do it. Congress approval rating is now 13%. That's where most of the crooks are along with 32,000 lobbyists in DC.

To ???, Well if it is a lie, now you know how it feels RIGHT?

Posted by: Boots on Oct 10, 2008 at 11:09 PM
To Bob, I have also did my research and that is exactly why I must vote for Obama. I have come on here for weeks now and I am tired of the republicans acting like we don't know how to research anything.I don't talk about it all the time. I for one am not going to type forever so you people can tell me I am wrong, I have better things to do with my time than type. This will soon be over and I am glad I don't really know any of you people.

Posted by: Steve Location: Kinston on Oct 10, 2008 at 10:59 PM
First, I need to know if Ms Palin was the one who gave the commissioner his job. If she was , what the hell are you liberals crying aboout? It seems to me that he was serving at her pleasure, not the other way around. It stinks of the same double standard that the poor congressional democrats raved about when the D.A.s who serve at the leisure of Pres. Bush were let go. HEY, dumbocrats, they serve at his pleasure. I did not hear the moralistic sobs of the liberals when Slick Willie let go of the whole lot(93 of them,i think) when he slithered into office in 1993. We of the conservative group have consigned ouselves to expect this double standard from liberals.

Posted by: Butch Location: Williamston on Oct 10, 2008 at 10:57 PM
Ireally hope that being V.P.she also abuses her powers when she stands up for what's right it's time we have someone who will stand up for what's right and do what it takes to break up this corruption we have in the White House for sure that is what built this great country. To me that is the meaning of CHANGE!!!!

Posted by: Blog Refuter Location: NC on Oct 10, 2008 at 10:32 PM
"Wolfgang", if your former boss was previously a governing official and a candidate/running mate for the Presidency of the U.S.A., then maybe a legislative committee would have been brought in to investigate. That's not to say that you would've gotten your job back, but it is to say that the boss would have been investigated on ethical grounds.

Posted by: Liza Location: Kinston on Oct 10, 2008 at 10:30 PM
Does anybody know why we can so quickly get an investigation with results on Sarah Palin but for some reason Barack Obama can keep all his "holy writings" confidential. If there is nothing to hide, why not full disclosure? We are all judged by those we "hang with" and he is no different. He has managed to sway alot of people but his recent past associations raise serious questions for me. I am personally disgusted by the Dems and Rep but can not help but see that the media and ultra liberal Americans do judge by different standards depending upon their views. Obama has NOT been scrutinized by the media like Palin and anyone who can not see this is either blind or 100% biased.

Posted by: Mr. Bob on Oct 10, 2008 at 10:16 PM
Boots, I've done my research. Vote a democrat into the WH. It might be the last time you have a choice.

Posted by: ??? Location: NC on Oct 10, 2008 at 10:14 PM
This is just another lie made up by the Demobrats to try to smear someone.

Posted by: WOLFGANG Location: CHOCOWINITY,NC on Oct 10, 2008 at 10:11 PM
A legislative committee. Sounds like the Spanish Inquisition. When I was younger I got fired, because I did not want to date my boss daughter. I wish I had a legislative committee?

To lavon, Well lavon we know McCain pit her for his VP, we never picked her for him. Obama[Biden 08

If Obama is what you all want... DON'T come back complaining when the Democrats jack your taxes up so high, that you barely bring home a paycheck. Don't complain when your child brings birth control home from school that you didn't know about. You want a liberal world? How about thanking God that you still live in a free country? This country is not today what it was meant to be when it was founded. Get over yourselves....

Posted by: lavon Location: kinston on Oct 10, 2008 at 09:07 PM
Who is the real Sarah Palin? I told you people that this woman was a no good for nothing woman from the beginning. She has no morals or respect for ethics. This woman has just been a complete disaster for Mccain's campaign

Posted by: Mr. Bob on Oct 10, 2008 at 09:01 PM
