Hyde County Schools Close Due To Gas Smell Save Email Print

The odor of natural gas has shut down several schools in Hyde County.

Schools on the mainland will close at noon today.

Superintendent Gregory Todd says the gas odor was noticed by workers this morning before students arrived at Mattamuskeet Elementary School.

Todd says school maintenance crews and the fire marshal found no leak. He says Piedmont Natural Gas says they added a chemical to their natural gas which could explain the odor.

The superintendent says as a precaution the schools will be closed for the rest of today.

Not only your local Board of Education was involved, but citizens need to focus on your Emergency Management staff, WHERE was your NEWLY hired County Manager, or better yet your local Fire Departments, who DO have the Authority to Evacuate to a safe location. Ive also heard no mention of your local EMS personnel on scene to check out your teachers and students that were affected by that "toxic, flamible additive to your natural gas". And Tracy, we need more citizens to go to your local Commissioners meetings and complain about how your tax money is being spent, how so many people are employed holding multiple positions and actually how can they focus on one job at a time safely, or focus on the safty of the masses. thx Kudos to Ms Tracy!

This is not the first time this has happened to Hyde County Schools. Our children could have been in great danger today and they acted like they could have cared less. This is the way it is. The parents are the last to know -- well not this time, because parents called parents and it was just passed on, alot of the children were picked up before they finally decided to let school out. Hyde County Schools needs to take lessons from other schools during these times. They not only put our children in harms way, but they put our teachers, parents and other staff at these great risks also. Anything could have happened and no one should have been in those school buildings, especially the elementary school, I was there and it was an awful smell. Thank you, for putting this article on your website.
