Concern Over Mercury Levels

Concerns about mercury have led several women from the east to volunteer to get tested. The Southern Environmental Law Center sponsored a testing area for women and children, those most susceptible to mercury poisoning, at the Greenville Town Common, Thursday. A few women and one ten-month-old gave hair samples that will be sent to a lab to test the level of mercury in their blood. Environmentalists say coal-burning power plants, like the one in Wayne County, are responsible for over 70 percent of mercury deposits in local waters. Test results should be back in about six weeks.
