Learning From The Past

A week into hurricane season, emergency officials in many towns across the East are conducting last minute checks in preparation for what is suppose to be a very active season. Pre-planning is what Anne Keyes spends most days doing in Plymouth. She's the director of the Emergency Operations facility for Washington County. Past storms, like Hurricane Isabel, have helped to identify problems emergency response teams deal with every season. One of those problems identified was the communications equipment. It's been replaced just in time for the 2006 hurricane season. Keyes says they now have satellite phone capabilities and radio communications with all the 911 centers. Keyes says partnerships with local businesses that can provide life saving services like debris removal and food services and regional emergency response crews from, Martin, Tyrell and Hyde counties will be a second line of defense.
