He scratched off a Tic-Tac-Toe lottery ticket and won a buck, so he bought a Powerball ticket. The next thing Haywood Mercer of Beulaville in Duplin County knew, he was $200,000 richer.
Mercer is the first major winner of Powerball in North Carolina. The big win is still sinking in for Haywood and his family, which has been through so much tragedy in the past few years.
Haywood's wife Larue says "I really and truly believe it's a blessing from God, because for the past few years we've had bad things happen to us, we've lost two children and we've had a lot of health problems. I've always heard you have to take the bad with the good."
So what do they plan on doing with the cash? The Mercers say they'll save a little for retirement, and buy a new lawnmower. The next Powerball drawing in our state is Wednesday night for $60,000,000. You can watch the drawing on WITN-7 News at 11 p.m.
