Bill Grimm a trainer for the J-H Rose High School Football Team has been suspended without pay.

According to Heather Mayo with Pitt County schools Grimm was suspended Tuesday morning.

Grimm was one of the first responders that looked at Rose Football Player Jaquan Waller who later died as a result of head injuries.

Waller passed away on September 20th from second impact syndrome, a rare condition that happens when someone gets 2 head injuries in a short amount of time. Waller had a concussion during practice but was later cleared to play. He then suffered another head injury in Rose's game against Hoggard and died the next day.

The investigation into Waller's death is ongoing. Grimm will continue his job as a teacher's assistant at Rose.

People were given a chance to pay their respects Friday night during Jaqaun Waller's viewing. Waller died Saturday after taking a hit on the football field last Friday night.

A great teammate, caring friend, and loving family member. That is how J.H. Rose football player, Jaquan Waller, will be remembered. The viewing was held at Salvation and Praise Church in Farmville from 6-8.

Within those couple of hours people came from all over to mourn the loss of a friend and family member.

J.H. Rose's football team will play their game Friday night against West Carteret, even though a week ago they lost a player.

Junior running back Jaquan Waller was injured during the game against Hoggard and he died the following day.

Rose coach Todd Lipe tells WITN he plans to move forward with his team. In an exclusive interview with Brian Meador, Lipe says his players are still hurting and he wants to help them as much as possible.

This week the team practiced after voting to go ahead with Friday's game. They will honor Waller by wearing his initials and his number 23 on their helmets for the rest of the season.

"I think they need each other, I think they need to play to feel good right now. Like I said Tuesday's practice was a good practice, we were upbeat, had a lot of spirit out there and I think the same thing will happen Friday when we get back on the field, Lipe told WITN.

Rose Player remembered by school

It was standing room only inside Jaquan Waller's memorial service in Greenville Wednesday.

Students and faculty members flooded the J.H. Rose High School auditorium to pay their respects to the fallen football star.

Waller died Saturday after he sustained a head injury during Friday night's game. During the memorial, Waller's team mates and friends reflected on his life.

Funeral arrangements have now been set for a J.H. Rose High School football player who died after Friday night's game.

Jaquan Waller's viewing will be Friday night, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Salvation and Praise Church on West Marlboro Street in Farmville.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Koinonia Christian Church on Greenville Boulevard in Greenville.

Officials say a closed brain injury caused by sequential impacts during a contact sport claimed the life of a high school football player in Greenville.

Jaquan Waller, a J.H. Rose running back, walked to the sidelines after he was tackled during the second quarter Friday night and collapsed.

He died the next day at the hospital. Earlier in the week in practice, Jaquan had to be helped off the field after being tackled during practice. A licensed injury management specialist that works at the school checked him out and gave him the go ahead to play Friday night.

The school says a formal investigation into Jaquan's death is being conducted.

Statement from Medical Examiner about Jaquan Waller's death:
"Jaquan Waller died accidentally as the result of what is called “second impact syndrome”. This is a very rare condition which can occur when two relatively minor head injuries occur in a short time interval. It usually occurs in young athletes and is very rapidly fatal. The cause of death on the death certificate reads “closed head injury due to sequential impacts during contact sport”. Neither impact would have been sufficient to cause death in the absence of the other impact. The first impact during practice on Wednesday caused a mild (Grade 1) concussion, a brief change in the level of consciousness. He was examined, not allowed to return to practice, and his mother was contacted to take him home. Information received by the medical examiner to date indicates that he appeared to have returned to his previous level of functioning by Thursday. The second impact on Friday caused severe brain swelling to develop. The swelling was sufficient to cause him to collapse by the time he had walked off the field, the usual length of time described in the literature on this rare syndrome – two to five minutes. Although medical attention was available very rapidly, the brain swelling could not be reversed and led to brain death by Saturday morning."

He was known as 350...Or just Quan. On the football field, Jaquan Waller proudly represented the number 23 as a running back for the J.H. Rose Rampants.

But he was much more than that to his friends. Now, they are mourning his death.

Jaquan was injured during practice Wednesday, but was checked out and given the okay to play Friday against Hoggard.

After a play Friday, he collapsed on the sidelines and died at the hospital Saturday afternoon.

Since then, Pitt County Schools Officials opened the school doors to students so they could come together and grieve.

Administrators says close to 200 students came Saturday, while close to 100 sought counseling Sunday.

Many of them are just coming to grips with the loss of a close friend.

"My momma, she woke me up that morning, like she had to explain to me, my friend had died." said Breonna Gray, " I was just in tears, couldn't get through the rest of my day, but I pulled it together had to be strong for Quan cause we know 350 you wouldn't want us not to cry.
We'll miss you and you'll never be forgotten. I love you."

"Quan, was like my little brother", says Gabrielle Mathews, " been knowing him since 6th grade. He was that goofy type of guy, always joking around and I'm gonna miss him....a lot."

Waller's team mates talked with their coach and voted to still have practice Monday and be ready to play their next game on Friday in memory of Waller.

Disbelief and shock... That's how students at J.H. Rose High school describe their reaction to the loss of one of their classmates.

Fellow students are grieving the loss of JaQuan Waller, a junior running back on the football team.

According to Pitt County Schools, Waller was injured during Friday night's game against Hoggard.

They say after a tackle he got up and ran to the sidelines and just collapsed. He was taken to Pitt Memorial Hospital and remained in critical condition, until his parents made the difficult decision to take him off life support.

School officials say the first and most immediate attention is to provide support to the family and students.

"Our hearts go out to the Waller family and football team,' commented Dr. Beverly Reep, school system superintendent. "We will continue to provide support to the family and our students as they cope with this loss."

Counselors were available at the school Saturday to talk with students and again Sunday, starting at 1 p.m.

A special fund has been established through the Pitt County Educational Foundation to help with funeral and burial expenses. Waller, a junior running back for the J. H. Rose High School Rampants was transported to PCMH last night after he collapsed on the sidelines during the second quarter of the game.

“Jaquan was a dedicated player that was well liked by his peers,” commented Todd Lipe, head varsity football coach at Rose. “Our thoughts are with the Waller family during this difficult time.”

The coaching staff and school counselors will meet with the team later today. Additionally, the school will be open for students to meet with counselors at 3 p.m. Saturday and on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

“This is a great loss for our school and community,” commented Dr. George Frazier, principal at J. H. Rose High School. “Our students and school family share in this loss.”

The loss of a student has a profound effect on the community. Our first and most immediate attention is to provide support to the family and our students. Our offices will continue to keep the media updated as new information becomes available.

I am saddened by the death of this young man that had so much talent.But to lay the responsibilty and blame on the trainer.Ultimately is the parents responsibility to make sure that her child is well.I know that she had just lost her father,but now she has lost both.And why isn't anyone saying anything about the M.D's that were on the Rose sideline during Jaquan's final game. My husband is a coach for a local football team and I love each of those players, but they are hard-headed and the ones that really love the sport,will tell you that they are fine just to be able to play the game.Quit trying to find blame in the trainer and realize that he should have gone to the dr.after practice on Wednesday when his mother was called and he might still be here.RIP#23 and peace be with the Rose Football Family.

This is a gross miscarriage of justice and obivously poorly handled by the school system. This man could not have foretold of this rare injury scenario. He is not a doctor. It would have been up to the parents to take this young man to the ER to have his thoroughly checked out if they were in any doubt whatsoever. It seems to me he was feeling well so you can't blame the parents or the trainer. It is just an unfortunate and terribly sad event. When a sport requires medical personnel on the sidelines, then the sport is no less than barbaric. Heat exhaustion and dehydration are much more common but this double impact injury is so very rare. I've only seen it one other time in my lifetime in medicine. Prayers to the family of this young man and all involved.

Thank you Bill Grimm for all that you've done to take care of our kids for years! There is no school that could have a more caring and devoted trainer. You don't deserve this treatment and I feel so sorry for you and the pain you must be feeling over this tragic situation. I also feel for the coaching staff & the team, and of course, Quan's family. Football is a dangerous sport. Parents know this, players know this, but it's a learning ground for many young men in so many ways. Whoever is responsibly for "investigating" this, please act sensibly and realize tragic accidents happen, and to place the blame on one man is ridiculous. Those involved will carry this with them the rest of their lives. That's punshment enough. And hiring certified medical professionals for the sideline? is this for every sport? Who will fund this? It will be hard enough funding the GAS to travel to Wilmington for the new conference, and now maybe medical professionals? Please use some common sense!

I don't think this individual deserves the blame - that's all. And, I might add, I don't know him at all. But thanks for pointing out a few things for me. I commented, just like you did. Check the definition of ignorance by the way because "last time I checked", yours is wrong!

I have to defend Mr. Grimm. My son, who played on another team against Rose, was hit on the field and transported via ambulance to PCMH a couple of years ago. Mr. Grimm talked with us and even called the next morning to check on us and recommended that we take him to a neurosurgeon, which we did. Thankfully, everything checked out fine, but ultimately it was OUR responsibility to have him checked out. A first responder is just that..a first responder. Their job is to treat to the best of their ability, but then to put the patient in more capable hands. If someone is to blame here, I think it would be the policy makers. Was there any kind of rule that said the child could not play again until he was clearned by a physician? Give Mr. Grimm his job back, with backpay. Instead, look into the school policies.

Way to go Rose and the school system. you've convicted a trainer of killing a kid. how do you think this looks to the public? you suspend a guy who's done the same job every other trainer in the country does because a freak accident happens? and you suspend him without pay??!! shame on all of you who made this decision! shame on all of you who acted cowardly in the face of lawsuits and blame!! how many times did you people and coaches tell bill he was doing a great job before this happened? shameful!!

This is just a horrible event. You know that the trainer has to feel terrible. I don't think he would ever do this on purpose. God bless this family because whatever comes out of this it will not bring him back. As a parent i truly cannot imagine how you feel.

I am a student at Rose and I was at the game in which Jaquan received the second impact--First of all, there WERE signs of a concussion after the first practice that were ignored..Second of all, the EMTs WERE at the game at the time of the tackle--the Sports Med students were not advised to retrieve the EMTs until well after Jaquan was first laid out on the side of the field. Those of you criticizing the parents and the EMTs, you obviously don't have all the facts. RIP Jaquan. Whoever's fault it is, we still miss you all the same.

Although I am saddened by the loss the Rose family and Jaquan's family have experienced, I'm perplexed at the media attention this is getting. I'm not sure how his family will ever get over this but the media attention does not help. Blaming the First Responder is mind boggling to me. If the boy was checked out by an MD which several reports have said he was, the first responder likely didn't make "decisions". Also, as a parent, if it was my child, a school official or "First Responder" would not "clear" my child. I would take my child to an MD or proper professional to make sure such incidents were not likely to happen. I may not know all of the scoop but to blame this person/suspend him is bizarre to me. There were mistakes made somewhere along this line for sure. However, in football and any type of contact sport, you are always running potential risks for serious injuries whether preventable or not. Blaming someone or finding the "bad guy" won't bring this boy back!

If he had a period of change in or lost of consciousness brief or not and mother was contacted to pick him up, the school should require clearance from a physician to resume the same activity that caused the injury. Common sense to me. I have a son playing football and he would not return to that field until a MD cleared him to do so. There are plenty of motor skill measurements, pupil reactivity etc. that can indicate brain trauma. This should have been assessed. Anytime loss of or change in consciousness takes place, medical treatment from a physician should be sought. I am sorry for all involved that this has happened but is possible that if those steps were taken he would have had a better chance. I'm sorry and hopefully other lives will have been saved. Awareness can be lifesaving.

Blog Refuter: I agree with you 100%. Having said that ever since I've heard of this death I have said to myself that his death could have been prevented. Don't get me wrong I am NOT playing God, neurosurgeon NOR a lawyer. I am simply saying that intuitively. Yeah, a big fancy word but the point is that I said that after following football head injuries since former 49ers QB Steve Young was forced out of the NFL after too many concussions. About two years ago the NFL promoted a seminar/study regarding head injuries. Yesterday I read on the SF Chronicle that another former 49er player "donated" his brain for a similar study. I may also point out that this subject has been portrayed on national TV. My humble suggestion is for the community to raise money to fund the medical training for their HS personnel that way you have a voice to protect your children. Thank you

Yes, a student died, but as heartless as it sounds, eventually, WE ALL ARE GOING TO DIE!! It was just this young man's time. There was nothing that could be done.

The charges against Coach Grimm are crap. The student was cleared to play because of the grade of concussion that he received. I am a soccer player and I get mild concussions every game. I never come out of the game because of it. Second impact syndrome is a rare condition. Besides, I was on the sideline when it happened. Coach Grimm was doing everything he could for Quan, but there is really nothing he could have done that would have saved Quan's life. By the way, why aren't we talking about the missing EMT's here? I know that they probably wouldn't have been able to save his life, but they would have gotten him to the hospital that much sooner.

I could be wrong but I truly believe that the school admin. is using this man as the Fall Guy for this incident. Yes I am very sorry that this young man died or even got hurt but for the system to punish the trainer is crazy. In high school sports there are others that make a call in this issue other than the trainer. The coaches and famiy also plays a part. I know from experience that family don't always make it to the games but there is a common sence to this and that is that if a person has been hit in the head and becomes unaware of what is going on (lost of the fundamentals) he should not play this contact sport again until he or she has been cleared from a doctor. Don't blame the trainer this is a coach and school admin. problem.

If I am not mistaking, it is the responsibility of the presiding school personnel to seek medical attention for sick/injured students while they are at school or participating in any school function. If any obvious complications occurred while the student was at home, then it would have been the responsibility of the parents to seek medical attention. Obviously, the said victim needed to had been examined by a physician after the initial examination by the school personnel. Either the presiding school personnel should have ordered that the said victim be sent to a medical practitioner's office or ordered the parents of the said victim to send him. I am sure that all committees investigating the ethics of this matter have these facts and other knowledgeable facts in mind.

To Jeff Of course the parents was notified. He did get attention, If you don't know the story let it go. His mother is already in pain she lost her husband, her father and son in less then 6 months she has suffered enough. RIP JaQuan! I personally do feel the school should be held responible because they should not let him play until he was released by his doctor but to hold one person at fault is wrong. My prayers are with you also Mr Grimm.

I would say that very few HS in the COUNTRY will have certified athletic trainer on staff. Most are just people who have taken a couple weekend courses, MAYBE an EMT certification at best. EMT's are qualified to do A LOT in the State of NC, more than many of you realize. Most schools couldn't afford to have a Certified trainer on staff.

There is more than one person that needs to be held accountable. The coach is ultimately responsible for his players. Communication is necessary amongst all team members. The coach should know what is going on with his players. After all they all claim to be one big happy family.

This is so wrong! The dismissal of the First Responder is simply putting a finger in the dike. The issue is that our children need qualified Sports Medicine Trainers, as well as physcian approved directives. A First Responder is only that a FIRST line person until more qualified help arrives. He should not be expected to work beyond his training or licensure and now to dismiss him implies that he was the cause, not an overlooked medical condition that should have required physcian involvement. Why is it that if the team does great, the Coach's name is praised, but when a situation like this obne happens the "First Responder' is the only name plastered across the news. The entire coaching staff and sports porgram should be examined. Please address the entire issue and problem before someone else is injured.

It would be nice if every school had a certified trainer, I just don't think that is practical. Becoming a Certified Athletic Trainer requires an individual to obtain a college degree, and to pass all three components of a national exam that is administered through the BOC or Board of Certification. How can they suspend this manan WITHOUT pay? This is just an investigation for goodness sake! He should take Pitt county to the cleaners.I am so sick of our school system and powers-that-be in them thinking they are GOD! I understand a young man passed away and I can't even imagine how his family feels, but, are they wanting a lawsiut and benefit $$$$ from this and like crap this is rolling downhill to settle on the trainer? Seems the norm now days. Was this trainer a certified DR??? No! The coach had the final say as the the young man going back into he game. If the young man was cleared by the DR earlier to return to play from the previous injury, how can you blame the trainer? I smell a RAT !!! GIVE HIM BACK HIS PAY! How is he to feed him family? ALL involved in this decision have you ever heard the verse: do unto others....??? to the trainer: i feel so sorry for you and I hope you get AWAY from those people as is it very apparent they don't give a rip about you! This guy was NOT a trainer!! He was NOT an certified athletic trainer!! He has no athletic training background at all. He was a first responder with CPR and First-Aid experience. The young man would not have been on the field that night if there was a certified athletic trainer on the sideline. Every college, NFL, and many high schools have cerified athletic trainers in place to handle these exact situations. Athletic trainers are educated on how to handle concussions. Put it this way as an example... If you were hiring someone to manage your families life savings would you hire a certified accountant/investor or someone who a took a couple of math classes? A kids life is far too important to not have QUALIFIED people watching over them.

I never thought that Pitt County schools could get any worse, but I was wrong. Everyone at J.H. Rose that was involved with this decision should resign immediately. This is outrageous.

The trainers are often there to cover the coaches rear end- the coaches are often the ones who make the call whether an injured player will play or not, regardless of what the trainer says. Its an unreal amount of liability that the trainer accepts by taking the job. This isn't the trainers fault, this isn't anybodys fault. It was an accident. Better rules should be in place to protect the players after an injury requiring treatment by a trainer.

Another reason why I, or many other people that have education degrees, have NO DESIRE whatsoever to be anywhere near public schools. Sure sounds like a scapegoat to me, and I know of many other passionate, great teachers that have had the unfortunate experience of being blamed for other peoples faults or shortcomings. Without a doubt, seeing anybody this young die is a tragedy, but as a country, we have become conditioned to blaming others, rather than accepting what has happened and trying to move on. My thoughts are with his family, and I will NEVER step foot in Pitt County as a teacher or administrator due to liability issues. It's a downright shame that I feel this way, but this is the hand that has been given to us as educators.

This ia a real sad situation. I can not even begin to imagine the pain the mother feels. But with that said, I know the first responder is grieving as well. Not because the school system is trying to point the blame towards him, but because he lost a student, football player, and friend. It is a shame Pitt County Schools do not have a better policy in place to handle injuries and who is "capable" of clearing student athletes to play. This man is not responsible in any way for this young man's death. He was only doing what he is trained to do and what the Pitt County School system allows him to do! I am so sorry for both families....neither family should have had to endure this pain! Pitt County School System's policy must and will be changed. I certainly hope another student athlete does not have to lose his life for this to occur. God Bless everyone involved.

Pitt County Schools needs a scapegoat. You will not find anyone who cares more about the players than Bill Grimm. He loves those kids like his own. The idea of casting blame on Bill is ludicrous. Is anybody really responsible for an accident such as this. Bill deserves his job back and it's easy to see that this is simply a political move on the part of a few. I salute Bill and what he means to the program.

I am so sorry this young man lost his life, I lost a son at a young age, so I know how his family feels, but this is so unfair to this Trainer, he had no idea anything like this was happening, the young man said he was alright. give him back his job and don't put a burden on him for the rest of his life, he is going through enough just coping with what happened. Give him some symphany.

It absolutely sounds like a witch hunt to me! The trainer could not have POSSIBLY known that a very "rare" condition was about to happen. How many football players have had their clocks cleaned on the field? I know we had several when I played HS football, and once we got our bearings together we were allowed to play again! It is sad that the school is taking this stance and trying to find a scapegoat for something that was obviously a terrible tragedy.

I hope the trainer doesnt loose his job over this...I know there will people jumping on the bandwagon and saying that this guy should loose his job and we should tar and feather him in the streets, but i disagree. With an enclosed head injury there are very little signs, if any, and most of the time they are only noticeable if the victim tells you accurately of how they feel. I wasnt there but most high school football players will say and do anything to prove they feel fine and to get back in the big game. Jaquan's death was a tragedy but it was a RARE circumstance. Contrary to many people's beliefs all accidents or deaths cannot be avoided...sometimes bad things just happen. Still, my utmost condolences to the family. Thoughts and prayers are still with you!

Danyells nobody can answer that question for you. I have always been told not to question our Heavenly Father for he knows what he is doing. Quan finished his life on earth and our Lord saw that it was time for him to return to his Heavenly home. If you live right you will meet Quan one glorious day when the Lord calls you home. Quan was put here on earth (as is others) for just a season. To us it isn't long and to the Lord its millions of years. I think its a good idea to keep reporting this. The reason being because the young dont think about death. Some even think they cant died. So hopefully this will open there eyes to know that death comes to the young as well as the old. Its time for all of us to get our life to together bc no man knows the day nor the hr he shall appear. To broaden my original comments:In addition to our brave servicemen and women, when a fireman or policeman is killed, that hardly merits this kind of on-going media coverage either. I know it could be argued that all of the people in those particular occupations knew the risks involved, but then everyone knows contact sports, particularly football,can be deadly..and it's just a game. When a policeman, fireman or soldier dies, it's while serving their fellow man, a far more noteworthy calling, and hardly merits more than one mention on the TV news channels or their respective websites. First of all, Vickie, the family NEVER asked for anything but just curious.. did you bury your husband, father AND son within 6 months of each other because Mrs. Waller did! To Wondering... I agree that there has been a lot of coverage and our soldiers need coverage also but one isn't the same as the other. I remember losing a friend suddenly when I was in high school and some of these kids just need to leave comments to help them heal. If anyone doesn't want to see the comments, don't click on the link. It is that simple. I pray that God will be with this family. Mrs. Waller has lost three very important people in her life within a few months all due to different circumstances. Pray for her.

I am a 2008 gradute of Jh Rose, i never knew who Jaquan was personally but i knew who he was. This story really touched and it was a reminder that there is no such thing as too young to die. I been following this story and read in a report that there was being investagations to see if jaquan's death could have been prevented...and the anwser is No...God had a plan.When God call its time to go...We all in the same race Jaquan just finished before us...we're on here for seasons..R.iP Jaquan you truly will be missed

Although I didn't know Jaquan personally nor do I know his family, I still feel compelled to offer my condolences because in GOD's eyes, we are ALL family. I can hardly imagine the pain that you are experiencing right now but I will ask that you put your trust in the Lord for HE is too wise to make a mistake. I know that your hearts are heavy but hopefully your burden will be lightened soon. This young man was doing something that he enjoyed. Good call to keep on playing, Coach Lipe. I can only imagine it has been quite the challenge this year, and this is just one more thing that will make the 2008 season a part of JHRs history. I believe as a former player, Jaquan would want his friends to go and win one! With that said, it kinda puts West Carteret in a precarious position but as they say, may the best team win!

We may never know all of the answers to the many questions that have come from this tragic accident BUT we do know that Jaquan died doing something that he had a passion for. I pray that we all learn something from this brief life and realize that 'this is not heaven'. We will all leave here one day and I also pray that we will all be ready. God please strengthen the family of Jaquan and his friends and even those who did not know him personally, that all may come to know you oh God and your Son Jesus for you promised never to leave us or forsake us and YOU want only what is best for us. At a time like this lets all come together in prayer for this family. The mother suffered a double loss. Her father and her son. May God strengten her heart and be with her in her time of need. I pray that the Lord will keep this family in peace with one another and comfort their heart. Amen

May God bless the family, friends and love ones of JaQuan. I did'nt know this precious young man, but my heart just goes out to the family. Just knowing that this young man was playing a sport that he loved and was injured and died as a result. This is a wake up call to me and all parents that have children playing high school football or any sport. The school needs better equipment for the protection of the players,this could have been prevented. This is not to place blame on the school or the coaches this was a tragic accident. My son plays high school football for KHS and his coaches are excellent and they are concerned for their players well being on the field and off this is a characteristic that coaches have. They may want their team to win but they would rather lose than to have this happen to one of their players. God Bless You J.H. Rose Football team

10 years ago when our son first felt some serious back pain and showed symptoms and signs of serious injury following a football scrimmage in preseason at a school out in the middle of nowhere, my first response as a parent and dad was anger, and I was going to sue somebody! The next morning we learned it was a cancer, and one of the first people to respond after the diagnosis was a licensed injury specialist, Mr. Bill Grimm. To this day when I see him, he still asks how son is doing, he still cares. He also was greatly helpful with our daughter who needed care after a sports injury. I respect Mr. Grimm enough to trust him with our children. Countless others have done so as well over the years here in Pitt County. While some may point fingers at Mr. Grimm, no one, not even doctors, can always know and determine everything. Mr. Grimm, thank you. And to the Waller family, in the time of your losses, we all--of this area and beyond--regret your loss, and pray God's peace for you

Jaquan was well-known by everyone. Me and Jaquan always joked and played around summer school.He always had smart jokes about farmville people but it didn't bother me. He always talked about football. By the end of the summer be was real cool and I felt like I have known him for a long time.Quan u will always be in my heart and everyone else that knew you.

Jaquan was a respected person and he always had me laughing in summer school. Jaquan was my home boy in summer school. He always talked about football was going to get him and his family out the hood, he had an positive aim in life. I think all high schools should get together and raise money to give to his family to show all our respect and love for the lost of this young man. they really need to get those helments for this young men, because football is a very dangous sport that most guys like to play. 350 u will always be in my heart and everyone else that knew of you or known you.

As I set here and scroll through the sayings on this young man and I come across one or two about a lawsuit. This young man was cleared by a doctor to play football. This should never be brought up during the greiving period for the sake of this family, friends, classmates and especicially the ones who coached him. They too have a heart and it is breaking. It makes me sad to think that others are thinking of nothing but money, this was a life that was taken and not done on purpose. To the Waller family you are in my prayers and as the days pass it will get easier but at the moment we think we can't move forward. Your son is rejoicing in the arms of his Heavenly Father our Lord Jesus.

Do parents have to sign a waiver? I know for other sports (even gymnastics) a parent must sign a waiver indicating that they know there are risks involved that could cause serious injury or even death. I'm just curious. Also, would signing this make it so the parents could not sue the school?

Look folks all these prayers and the rest are a bit mellow dramatic for me. If you want to blast me for being insensitive go for it. Instead of typing away with all those wishes WHY don't you loudly campaign for better trained medical staff available to prevent this from happening again? Obviously a rapid evaluation did NOT help this young man. An evaluation done by a neurologist followed by a brain scan would have certainly prevented this death. This routine is done on other states and that is a fact. Thank you

I went to summer school with 350 and he was a cool guy someone who will have laughing. He always came to summer school faithfully he was that person i would like hang out with. I really wish that all schools should find the money to buy those new high-tech football helmets with the impact sensors in them. Football is and has always been a risky sport. It's a shame that cost prohibits schools from being able to use the newest technology available to save a child's life.

WOW, this is sooooo sad, so many deaths in the past months dealing around football. Someone does need to check into this and help the players realize this is a game, BUT always safety first. I am soo sorry for everyone affected by this tragedy. Life has no options, and it's sad we never know when we will be called. I hope that all Hope isn't loss because God has a job to do, and from what I read this young man was a great asset to the team and school. He will be missed, Remember you guys loved 350*Quan, but God loved him best. To the parents do your own investigation don't let the law do there work, you do yours and do it well. The school nurse needs to be terminated as well as dealt with to. God bless and much love.

This is a terribly tragic loss for our local sports community. David and Blog Refuter~ Your concern is definitely on the hearts and minds of many, but as a high school coach, I must say athletes of today do not resemble athletes of years past. They are bigger, faster, stronger, and contact sports are more about physical advantage and the Jimmys and Joes not just the X's and O's than just a ball and two teams. As coaches, we try to maintain the player's safety first, but the size and strength or our opponents and even our kids is not something we can control. We are cultivating college student-athletes and competitiors. They are not the scrawny, eloquent athletes of the 70s and 80s. Having one of my athletes injured or die is one of my worst fears, but this young man lived a life of passion for a game he loved. So many people loved him- that's obvious. 2night I am sad about the loss of life for us, but I celebrate the life he lived and the athletes that take the field to compete.

This was a very sad situation. To have lost the grandfather just the day before and now to lose the son, would be almost unbearable. God Bless you. And to the coach, my deepest sympathies, also. I can only imagine what you are going through. Unfortunately, like in all cases of loss of life, it doesn't take long before there are those, like some here, who want to point the finger of blame. This young man was doing what he loved to do, apparently. Accidents happen in life and sometimes it is so hard we have a difficult time accepting and understanding. I will tell you this is an unstanding Christian man whose heart is breaking right now because of the accidental death of one of his players. He is an individual who would never have let a player on the field with a known injury to win a football game. Think before you post a message like this. It is reprensible and cruel. I can only guess that you must be a big enough FB fan that the sport is more important than the safety of the players?!! I am in tears as I write this. I just want to let the family of this young man know that I am praying for God's grace to pour out abundantly on you during this time of loss. What comes to mind when I read about the untimely death of this bright, young man who appears to have been loved so much by family and friends is the song "Whose report will you believe?" Doctors had given Quan their report a few days before the Lord gave his report that this WAS Quan's time to leave this world. We all need to remember that we do not know when our time on this earth will end. We need to make sure we are ready to go when the Lord calls us home. God bless the Waller family.

I cannot help but wonder how safe is public school sporting equipment?I understand this young man had a previous injury days before this game.Did he have X-rays?How much pressure does coaching place on these teen-agers to play whether hurt or not?A life once gone cannot be salvaged.I hope the family inquires thoroughly because I wondered if this could have been prevented.Is this the same coach for the injured player at the swimming pool.Mothers no sport or fame is worth your child's life.

What a tragedy. My sincere condolences to the family. I was thinking the same thoughts as David from Manteo. Well stated David. I'm 40. This type of thing rarely to never took place, when I was in HS. My brothers & I all played HS football, & not to be immodest, but we were star players & took it pretty seriously. The level to which we practiced & prepared is vastly different now (my experience, in comparison to my 3 nephews/3 different school systems). It's definately much more rigorous. How seriously my nephews/their coaches take it is greater. The overall intensity of HS football is greater, in so many ways, than back in the day. These HS FB player deaths have happened too many times now, in the past few years, to be considered isolated incidents. I do hope the issue will be looked into. Studies should be done. Something is wrong, and exactly what needs to be identified. These kids shouldn't pay with their lives, to participate in the HS rite of passage, of playing ball.

I am a sophmore at JH Rose highshool and though I did not know Jaquan personally I feel as a highschool student that someone else has died. Every year at Rose someonr dies whather it is gang related or a car accident. But to me loosing someone to a popular sport at our school makes it all the worse. I hear many people give their condolences to the family and say that "we are all deeply sorry for your loss" , but are thay really. Jaquan was a pretty popular guy and many will shed tears because he is no longer here. Many highschool students,i include myself in this, take advantage of time and people that once taken away we regret our mistakes or our cruelty. I am writing the news just to give you insight on how i think a majority of students feel. Please don't make Jaquan just another highschool student that has passed due to unfortunate events. He is a real person and this is real life.

Isnt this like the third or fourth child to die while playing high school football in the past few years? Is this not bringing up some concerns by not only the parents but from these schools as well? I mean, we dont send our children to school to die but it seems as though that is what is happening. Apparently these kids are playing this sport allot rougher than they should. I know these schools should be playing for the team spirit but at what cost? Is this sport in our high schools worth losing a child here and there? Maybe some reconsideration or at least some changes of how they play the game should be done to help secure the safety of our children. Besides, isnt that what these schools should be doing anyway? If a school sport has caused the death of more than one life in a few years time, then maybe changes should be made.. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family...

Our condolences go out to the Waller family. My son has played against JaQuan even though they did not know each other it has been very hard for him to deal with this. To the family our thoughts and prayers are with each of you. We can only imagine the devastation you are going through right now, but always know that God knows best and he will get you through this.

as i sit here and cry, i think of how short life is...and reflect that God has a plan for all of us. we never know when our time will come to be in his loving hands. Prayers go with all of the waller family, the entire family at JHRose, with all teens and families. Let's not take one more day for granted. I have just read the terrible news, that Jaquan Waller has died. The Hoggard Football family is so deeply saddened by this tragic news. We so much love to play the game, but bottom line is everyone on the field is a part of our family, on both sidelines, and this hurts so much. Words can't express our sorrow. Numerous reports are stating that Jaquan has died as a result of his injuries. ihigh reports he died around midnight. WITN responsibly recanted their story when Heather Mayo reported that Jaquan was still listed in critical condition, but the reflector website is reporting that he died and has comments from players at the hospital. I would love to find out that this is wrong! WITN cannot be blamed when so many are reporting this!
