The Naval Hospital and Camp Lejeune Schools are trying to prevent the spread of the highly contagious whooping cough, after a case turns up in a student at an elementary school on base. Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a treatable bacterial infection of the respiratory tract. Early symptoms are similar to the common cold and can lead to high pitched whooping sounds and vomiting. Medical personnel are evaluating students to see if the infection is spreading.
