Onslow County is preparing for the worst, a category five hurricane and a pandemic flu outbreak all at the same time. The situation is not real, but participants in a county-wide emergency exercise are treating the disaster as if it were. Representatives from nearly every department in Onslow County spent the first day of a three-day drill testing equipment and refreshing their skills on special computer programs. While similar drills are scheduled every year, emergency officials say another reason for the drill is the fact they found some gaps in their existing disaster plan, such as pre-identifying inland shelters. Different phases of the drill are scheduled to take place Wednesday and Thursday.
