Millions Needed to Save Billions of Dollars in Crops

Protecting the state's $59 billion dollar agriculture industry from threats such as the avian flu and bio terrorism is on the mind of
Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler.

On Thursday he was on Capitol Hill seeking federal funding to protect our state's assets.

Troxler met with Senators Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr of North Carolina and Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee. Troxler also met with Representatives David Price, Walter Jones, Robin Hayes and Howard Coble, all of North Carolina.

Troxler is seeking Congress’ support for the North Carolina Food and Agriculture Defense Project and the Avian Influenza Mitigation and Response Project. The projects, with a total price tag of about $2.3 million, use a combination of technology, planning, education and cooperation between government and industry to help the state guard its farms, food processors and retail food outlets from natural and man-made threats.
