The government has recalled a baby bassinet that has already claimed the lives of two children.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is telling parents that have a "Close-Sleeper Bedside Sleeper" bassinet made by Simplicity to stop using the product immediately. Two infants died when they apparently slipped through the metal side bars and strangled.

The government says the Pennsylvania company's three-in-one and four-in-one bassinets contain metal bars that are spaced farther apart then federal standards allow.

Simplicity was purchased by SFCA, Incorporated at public auction this April, but the new company has refused to cooperate with the government and recall the product. SFCA also maintains that it is not responsible for products made by the former Simplicity company.

The CPSC is asking parents to please share this information with others and with their daycare facility.

to Alicia, my bassinet also has the cover and bar. and actually the baby cannot even get to the bar on mine b/c of the heavy covering. i called walmart and they were total butts and said they will not take it back without a receipt but the headquarters said they will b/c its a recall product. and basically your screwed out of money b/c the business closed down. the safety commission told me on the phone that the company has refused to recall the product months ago, and only after this warning yesterday that they started to recall the bassinet.

We have one of these and after looking at how the bar was when the child suffocated, the person had the bar exposed and on mine there is a cover that you are supposed to velcro over that bar so it is not exposed. We have one bar removed so there should not be any problem. Our baby is estimated to be at 9.4lbs right now so she may not even get to use the basinet anyway and I have a positioner that I would put in the basinet so she would not go anywhere. I just do not understand why the people would have that bar exposed when it clearly shows you need to cover it with a cover.
