Jail overcrowding is a problem in many counties and one that can prove costly.

As Onslow County awaits completion of a new 526 bed 65 million dollar jail, it must send inmates to Sampson County because of overcrowding.

Sheriff Ed Brown says the current jail can only hold 115 people but is housing 25 more than that. The extra inmates will go to Sampson County at a cost of $50.00 per day per inmate to the county.

Brown expects Onslow to be able to house inmates from other counties once the new prison is complete. He says it could bring in up to five-million dollars a year.
