Governor Calls For Gas Tax Freeze

Governor Mike Easley is calling on the General Assembly to freeze the gasoline tax. The move would keep the rate from increasing from the current level. Right now, the gas tax automatically goes up when the cost of fuel increases. The gasoline tax is among the highest in the Southeast at just about 30 cents per gallon. Money from the gas tax is used to build and maintain the state's roads. To make sure road projects continue, Easley will provide an additional $200 million to the Highway Trust Fund.
