Some little kids are taking big strides in an effort to combat sedentary habits within their community. Friday at Northwest Elementary School in Pitt County, the kindergarten through fifth grade students laced up their shoes and hit the track for their first annual walk-a-thon. The new walking track is the first of its kind in the community, made possible by grant money from the Pitt Memorial Hospital Foundation and community schools and recreation. School officials say they want to advance the track and add fitness equipment for not only the children, but the entire community.
