Kentucky Politician Arrested After Telling Joke In Grocery Store Save Email Print

HARLAN, Ky. (AP) -- Politicians are known for lame jokes. But when Otis "Bullman" Hensley tried a generations-old Appalachian jest on a woman and two girls at the grocery store, the family thought it was downright criminal.

Hensley, who earned notoriety for oddball antics as a longshot gubernatorial candidate, spent three days in jail in this eastern Kentucky coal town last week after being arrested over the wisecrack.

"Jay Leno makes jokes every night and makes millions," Hensley said in his thick Appalachian accent. "I make one joke and go to jail."

He could have faced as many as 10 years in prison, but a charge of attempted unlawful transaction with a minor was dismissed on Monday.

The ordeal began last week when Hensley's wife sent him to a local grocery store to buy ground beef. While there, Hensley encountered a woman with her two nieces, ages 11 and 13. "I offered to trade her a fattening hog for those girls," Hensley said. "I meant it as a joke. I've said it a million times. Most people get a kick out of it."

The woman didn't laugh. Instead, the family obtained a warrant for Hensley's arrest from the local prosecutor, claiming the comment was intended to entice the children into illegal sexual activity.

On Tuesday, the girls' father accepted an apology from Hensley and shook hands with him in a Harlan County courtroom. The man declined to discuss the case with reporters afterward.

Prosecutor J.D. Smith asked the judge to dismiss the charge, saying both sides want to put the matter behind them.

"He absolutely meant no harm," Smith said of Hensley. "It was a joke to him."

Appalachian scholar Loyal Jones said the jest Hensley made has been around for generations and actually is intended as a compliment.

"I've heard many variations of that," said Jones, retired director of Berea College's Appalachian Center. "You might hear 'That's a good looking boy; I'd trade you a pocket knife for him' ... Political correctness has ruined country humor."

In Kentucky, citizens can obtain arrest warrants simply by filing a complaint with local prosecutors. Defense attorney Karen Davenport said no investigation is necessary for police to make an arrest when the charge involves an alleged sexual offense.

In the Hensley case, Davenport said, the arrest was unwarranted because he had done nothing criminal.

In the last two gubernatorial campaigns, Hensley traveled the state with a giant Fiberglas bull on which he attached a sign proclaiming that, if elected, he would "chase the bull out of Frankfort." He received 3.3 percent of the vote in 2003, his best showing.

??? if I'm not mistaken, I didn't care what you said about Obama, I just thought it was funny you said he wasn't qualified for anything, then your following sentence you used the word "aint". I just asked you what were you qualified for using the word aint. Didn't have anything to do with Obama but all to do with your grammar. You could have been talking about a chicken, if you use the word "aint" it's wrong...sorry...for you!

To obama 08 for prez ; You sure did seem to care what I had to say about Obama on the other stories comments.

Why no Posted by: MW on Aug 27, 2008 at 07:24 AM, I'm very outspoken, I've never denied that. I didn't even know you had noticed my comments. There is a saying, I'm sure you've heard....the squeakiest wheel gets the most oil. But i think most bloggers find me offensive because I'm not a yes man or woman i should say. I have my own opinion and i don't have to say kudos to every blogger because i don't care what you or anyone else who blogs thinks of me. Lets say for instance this topic. Everyone thinks the woman over reacted. Maybe she was molested when she was young. Maybe where she came from they sold little girls. Or maybe she didn't want some dirty old man in her girl's faces. Just because you can do something doesn't always mean you should. But thank you MW for the question, and I hope I answered it to satisfy you. Have a great Thursday!

That is one of the most outrageous things I have heard in a long time! It is unbelievable how litigious our society has become, such a harmless remark that a lot of southerners might make!

When I call someone out they just don't print it at all. Often they drop my posts and I haven't actually broken the rules. They sometimes have a strange way of determining what is acceptable.

Hey lady, get a clue. Did he touch your nieces? Did he offer them money for sexual activities? I bet the woman is an old sphenster. I bet she 'ain't from round here'. That lady needs to get over it , and the cops should have laughed at her.

Posted by: Lina Location: Pitt Co on Aug 26, 2008 at 12:50 PM
This just shows how anal America has become and what political correctness has done to this country. I'm from the north and I've heard this saying. It's ashame good ol' sayings like this are being lost through generations. The lady must have never been around a joking, funny old man before. If my dad ran into her in the store, he'd be in jail, too!

Posted by: diane Location: nc on Aug 26, 2008 at 12:06 PM
Bet he will remember to "think twice before you speak", because your style of humor maybe an insult to others.

I guess he wasn't as good as Rodney Dangerfield. You know my wife is such a bad cook we pray after we eat. I asked my wife what can we do to improve the houes, she told me to leave. I go and try kiss my kids good night they flip a coin to see who's going to kiss me. I guess no respect. Maybe Otis should have tried that routine

VBush I’d like to know what it wrong with WITN. I’ve commented on things over the past few months; not one violent one and WITN won’t print it. Then you get the viscous & violent people like ******** & *********** that writes in and you post their comments. Tell me what is wrong with this picture?

I'm from the deep south and have never heard this used before. I wouldn't know what to think if some old man said it to my daughter. I would likely ignore him. Reading this had me hearing that song from Deliverance in my head. Some backwoods remark is what he made.

Posted by: GoPirates Location: GVegas on Aug 26, 2008 at 09:33 AM
I agree with southern lady..I dont think that he should have been arrested, but he doesnt need to go up to strangers and make those kinds of comments, if he said that to me and my daughter, I would be thinking the same thing. Im a little slow with jokes too but still...

Posted by: southern lady Location: nc on Aug 26, 2008 at 08:59 AM
With a nickname like Bullman why expect anything more....he is obviously hearing banjos in his head on a full time basis. It may have been a compliment at one time but regardless of the age of the girls it is just plain ignorant to make comments like that to strangers. No wonder his political career stagnated years ago.

Posted by: VBush Location: MHCY on Aug 26, 2008 at 07:40 AM
How ridiculous!I will agree with Gladys. She should hit I-75 and head north...it's closer.I do not know where this woman came from, but I am sure she is not from any rural upbringing. City folks need to stay in the city where their delicate sensibilities can be catered to. I can't believe this man was even arrested to begin with. This is insanity.

Posted by: Blog Refuter Location: NC on Aug 25, 2008 at 11:11 PM
I see it as a compliment, but I don't think that the girls are of age for him to appropriately make that comment in regards to them. Now, had he been a family friend, who the aunt would've known was just joking around, I am sure she would've processed it differently. It's just a matter of caution.

Posted by: gladys Location: goldsboro on Aug 25, 2008 at 10:20 PM
that's the silliest thing I have ever heard... Lady is a LOONIE... that is a southern compliment!! She is one of those that needs to hit 95.. and head NORTH>> AND not look back.. or we'll shooot!
