A mother is dead and her two-year-old child burned after a fiery crash in Craven County this afternoon.

It happened on Old Cherry Point Road around 1:15 p.m.

Authorities tell WITN News that the car was headed toward Havelock when it apparently crossed the center line and struck a tree. The car caught fire and deputies used fire extinguishers to put out the blaze.

The woman has been identified as 25-year-old Emily Carr. Her two-year-old daughter, Cassidy Carr, is in the Chapel Hill burn center.

Troopers say Carr veered off the road to the right -- then over corrected to the left, hit a fire hydrant and then a tree. They say that's when the car burst into flames.

The woman was trapped in the car for about 30 minutes and was taken to Craven Regional Medical Center where she later died.

I work with Emily Carr's mother in Grand Rapids, MI. Please know that my thoughts and prayers, as well as many others here in GR, are with your family. We are so sorry for your loss. We're all praying that Cassidy makes a full recovery. You will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. God bless you all.

As the first one on the scene, I can't describe how I felt when I arrived. What I was afraid of ended up being the outcome. That outcome being someone lost their life. Something else that was horrifying was hearing a child cry out from inside the vehicle at it burned and then feeling helpless. I'm so glad we were able to get Cassidy out of the car before it was too late. I hope she is doing well and makes a quick and full recovery. I pray for her and her father as well as the rest of Emily's family. They have been on my thoughts and prayers ever since.

As the wife of one of the emt's on the scene, I pray for peace for this family and I hope they will always know the prayers of all the firefighters and emts are with them. Our love and faith are with you. I know how hard all of them fought to save her life and reach the child. They have been devastated as well.
