Mystery Visitor to Kannapolis Was Martha Stewart Save Email Print

The secret is out. Lifestyle guru Martha Stewart was the mystery guest of a billionaire developer who prompted local officials to take down flags honoring the late NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt in his hometown.

Stewart visited the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis on Thursday with David Murdock, the campus founder and owner of Dole Food Co.

Stewart said she would take ideas from the campus to her Center for Living at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.

Last week, city workers took down flags honoring Earnhardt after an official at Murdock's real estate company and a local tourism official said some were dirty and torn and might upset a Murdock guest, who wasn't identified.

how am I a bigot? im not intolerant. before you go throwing adn names, know what they mean. and the only reason i believe this is became thats what I was told. just like you are told everything you know, we all were. just like we are told there are other planets out there, we've never been there but we know its true. because we were told. we dont really know anything about either of the candidates, all we know is what were told.

Phillip that comment hurt me. I'm sensitive. :(

Not me again. I hope this person is having fun.< I didn't say that. You must feel powerful to hide behind my name and post things I haven't said. Even though I know who you are. The only ONLY reason I haven't struck is because.....you don't need to know that. You silly young boys have made a grave mistake. He who laughs last - laughs the longest.

LOL@Dave I'll take that as a compliment.

To Phillip: Are you saying that Obama does not acknowledge the American flag? What is your evidence for such? A chain email? A doctored and heavily edited video clip on the internet? How about do some real research and stop relying on chain emails for your "facts." To believe something so ridiculous without proof means that it is something that inside you WANT to believe. And if deep down inside, you WANT to believe, well that is fine. That is your opinion, but don't go spreading lies to other people. Keep your bigotry to yourself. Thank you very much. Have a blessed day in this great land of America!

Posted by: Phillip Location: Mt.Olive on Aug 6, 2008 at 12:36 PM
Im not sure you could be a true redneck. We wouldnt want a prez that dosent acknowledge the American flag, sorry. (-for the record- McCains no better)

Awww Dave that is so sweet, I'm black so I don't know where I would fit in, but I have lots good white friends that call themselves rednecks.....so I guess that's what I would be. I'm proud to be called a redneck, this is if you guys would have me.

I think that WITN needs to do more monitoring about the nature of comments that are posted here! Who cares about the flag? They should have left it up. Simple as that.

Posted by: Rob Location: NC on Aug 6, 2008 at 12:04 AM
First, Earnhardt is dead. Get over it. Second, we all know Martha Stewart is really The Wicked Witch Of The West. It's proven fact.

Charlie Jordan, sorry, hog guts ... or chittlin we call it ..... if it is so bad you need to carry your (tail) back north. I'm not an Earnhardt fan but I'm a fan of the south. You complain, you don't like .... leave! Simple .... leave! You talk about crime .... duh huh ... Martha ... Charles Mansion .... Boston Strangler ..... oh .... Jeffery Dahmer! Don't think any of them were from the South!

Yes, DE was a legend .... you want hero's? God Bless those boys ... Marines, Army, Navy, and Air Force. They fight for our freedom to speak as we can. What has Martha done ..... served time in prison, been convicted of a felony ..... has her own TV show .... what is this showing our kids ..... commit a felony and be famous! My own son is serving his second tour in Iraq ..... you need a hero .....you decide!

Posted by: Ray Location: Newport, NC on Aug 5, 2008 at 12:43 PM
Who in the hell does an ex-con think she can dictate that a Dale Earnhardt flag be taken down ...... apparently let us all bend over and kiss this criminals (tail). Its not about Dale, its about how we should feel sorry for these people like Martha! People that has a criminal enterprise, those that made the common people lose their retirement. We now should stand up .... Martha is now doing Wal-Mart ..... she screwed K-Mart. So if you see Martha, tell her to kiss my red, white and blue (behind) ......!

DE grew up, lived, worked and helped many others out in the community of Kannapolis. He never went to jail, never committed a felony. This is his community, let them honor him the way they want to. Why change things for Martha? She has been in jail, is dishonest........

Posted by: Chris Location: Greenville on Aug 4, 2008 at 06:43 PM
If the flags were soooooo dirty and soooooo torn , Martha Stewart could have done a spot on her "waste of time show". "How to fix a worn out flag". Martha Stewart didn't make Kannapolis, Dale did. And who does she thinks she is? Nobody special in my opinion.

To Proud Yank; Obviously you have nothing of value to say as you make some ridiculous reference to something that happened 143 years ago. Any reasonable American or historian realizes that the "loss" as you call it is what needed to happen or else we would not have become the nation we are today. However our Federal government continues to this day with practices that facilitated that situation to begin with. It might be better for you to think a little bit before you start typing.

Posted by: Rob Location: Nc on Aug 4, 2008 at 01:25 AM
I'm sick and tired of being told who is a "hero" in this country. I don't worship race car drivers, or movie stars, or the military by a long shot. We have no true heroes any more.

Cactus, those of us who are in the military don't choose where we live. It is forced upon us!

Why would anyone move to a location that "leads the US in crime, poor schools and obesity"? Most families try to avoid such problems.

Posted by: Cactus Location: Strabane, NC on Aug 3, 2008 at 09:42 PM
So we still have northern carpetbaggers trying to save the South, didn't you try that once befor?

Posted by: VBush Location: MHCY on Aug 3, 2008 at 09:39 PM
To the "Proud Yank!" If you have such terms of endearment for us why are you here? If our crime is so high, and education is so bad, and obesity is so high, what was your attraction to our part of this great nation? We don't need you to save us, we have been happy as we are. I have often wondered why southerners do not relocate to the north in droves as you do in the other direction. I can tell you what we don't like...is you coming here and trying to change things to make them more like where you came from. If you liked it that way then why did you come here? If you want to move here...fine. Just accept things for what they are and the way WE do things and enjoy your life. End of story.

Posted by: Proud Yank! Location: Greenville on Aug 3, 2008 at 08:39 PM
The Northerners are here to SAVE the South because the statistics don't lie. The South leads the U.S. in crime, poor schools, and obesity.

Posted by: Proud Northerner Location: Greenville on Aug 3, 2008 at 08:30 PM
Southerners may call Northerners Yankees BUT we have plenty of our own names for Southerners. None of course will WITN see as edible to add to this topic though.

Posted by: Dave Location: Greenville on Aug 3, 2008 at 07:48 PM
I'm with ya Jersey Girl; I don't know why they hate us Northerners here in Pitt County. We are all ONE country so why can't we all just get along? There is enough bad out there in this world and we don't need to be turning on one another for the foolish reason of what part of the country we are from!

Posted by: Jersey Girl Location: NC on Aug 3, 2008 at 06:34 PM
to all the yankee haters down here...what is your problem. I moved down here not because I "screwed up up there" but because I liked it down here, the weather is FAR better and its an overall cheaper place to live. Edited

As a former resident of the area who worked within walking distance of the Earnhardt memorial.I just wanted to say that these "flags" were used to promote tourism in and around Kannapolis. The state of N.C. even switched hwy signs Hwy 136 in Kannapolis became Hwy 3,and hwy 3 in Currituck county became hwy 136. During race weeks at Lowes Motor Speedway Kannapolis picks up a few tourist dollars because of Earnhardt's connection to the area.Murdoch has his detractors from his previous ownership of Cannon Mills. Salisbury Post has a great write up with many comments on the banners.Martha Stewart may have many fans, but it seems Earnhardt's are speaking a little louder at this time.Hopefully the bio-tech center will revitalize the area around the former Plant#1 site even in my opinion K-town will forever be known as Dale's hometown. Not to take anything away from dale's legacy. He did alot behind the scene for K-town.There should be more to honor Mr. Cannon's contribution to Kannapolis

Earnhardt was an egotistical man who is NOT a hero! How can you call somebody who drives a car in circles for hours on end a hero? The real heroes are our nations military!

It doesnt matter if these people consider D.E a hero or not . This is their way of honoring a person that has in some way brought joy to their lives . Whether it be in entertaining them or inspiring , doesnt matter , they have the right to honor him . Having to take down their flags so they dont offend another individual is wrong . Martha is a guest and if she is such a great person , she would understand that these people are just expressing appreciation for D.E.

Dale Earnhardt a HERO ... LOL! What a joke. Just what I'd expect from people who eat hog guts and enjoy watching cars slam into each other and wreck. Dale Earnhardt was an ego-driven, self-absorbed redneck with a little money. Case closed. You people need to get a life.

Posted by: astounded @ stupidity Location: eastern carolina on Aug 2, 2008 at 06:50 AM
once again the point of the story has been missed. If you can read... try reading it again...the reason the flags were removed is that they were dirty and torn. That is disrespectful to any flag, especially a commemorative flag. I am sure Martha would have liked to see the flags flying if the town of Kannapolis had taken care of them. I was there in July and thought they were looking very ratty, the streets and sidewalks are looking rather trashy too.

Posted by: N Location: Jacksonville on Aug 2, 2008 at 06:40 AM
Sounds to me like the local gov't in Kannapolis may be a little "under the influence"....the influence of money....also sounds like Murdock has the town in his pocket....you people need to get a life and stop trying to impress the wealthy.

How many NASCAR drivers have been charged in a felony? Compare that to "pro ballers". You know I don't consider pro ballers as a sport, its a business. Sports are in high school and college and I'm not too sure about college.

Posted by: Concerned Citizen Location: Greenville on Aug 1, 2008 at 06:27 PM
The problem is that people are more concerned with making a good impression so they can make a dollar then to do the right thing and simply replace the damaged flags. It was far easier and cheaper to simply remove the flags then to replace them.

Posted by: This is a reality check Location: NC on Aug 1, 2008 at 05:58 PM
So, he drives around a circle, always turning to the left, Right? How many of you like and support pro baseball and foot ball. Baseball: swing the bat, hit the ball, run around the four bases. Football: kick off, pick up ball, run to the other end of the field. Whats the difference?

Obama 08, as an educator you should take your blindfold off. Want to experince a drive try "want to be petty" (on your internet) for the driving experience of a life time. One of my heros is John Force and the other Don "Big Daddy" Garlets both drag racers. Big Daddy was behind most of the safety features used in drag racing today.

Rather than complain about Martha , complain about the city fathers removing the "Dale Trail" flags. Many of you feel Dale was not a "hero", maybe so in your eyes, but to NASCAR fans he was. I don't think people should look up to sports figures, but they do. So all he did was drive a car at 200 MPH, (but he was dang good) some do that on the freeway (or at least think they can). My heros are not in NASCAR, but in Iraq, but then we all have our own little flags to fly. No pun intended. No matter what you feel about someones hero, they may feel same about yours.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 1, 2008 at 05:20 PM
I agree. Racing isn't even a sport in my head. What a waste of time. I don't like Martha either, but I also don't see any Nascar person a hero of any kind. Please!!!!!!!!!!

to Bill, just because Earnhardt Sr never taught YOU a lesson don't go saying he has nevr taught ANYONE a lesson. He has children and friends that have ALL told stories of things they learned from their friend and father. Please don't disrespect a man just because you never met him and you didn't have the honor of learing from him.

Posted by: Bill Location: Salisbury on Aug 1, 2008 at 02:46 PM
Martha Stewart has made far more valuable contributions to society than Dale Earnhardt ever did. Her lessons on cuisine and culture contain are useful for the development of people and progress. Nascar isn't anything but a bunch of drivers going around in circles. No one has ever learned anything watching a Nascar Race, and Dale Earnhardt never taught anyone a useful lesson in his life. You people should understand that Martha Stewart rightly eclipses D.E. in importance, and Kannapolis was right to take down those dirty tattered flags to honor her coming. I think it's wonderful that such a woman should be willing to grace us with her presence. And so far as "Yankees" are concerned, I hope more and more people of Martha's sort move down here and teach us some culture and dignity ... and show us how to cook! We could use more Yankees around, and I hope we get them. It's too bad the sports networks don't replace Nascar races with Martha's show; I'd sure watch! I think she's quite a lady.

Reality check, folks. Earnhardt is dead. Get over it.

Posted by: annonymous Location: nc on Aug 1, 2008 at 01:56 PM
Puleasssssssseee - if Dale Sr doesn't care that the flags are worn and torn then why the H should anybody be concerned that it might upset Martha. She needs to learn some manners and accept people and places for what they are, after all, I am sure the jail didn't put up fresh curtains in anticipation of her arrival.

Posted by: race fan Location: charlotte on Aug 1, 2008 at 01:28 PM
Martha can not do any thing for this state. She is really a nobody that can cook and clean. Please martha go back home. The town needs to put the flags back up for the legend and get rid of the felon.

Posted by: Lynn Location: winterville on Aug 1, 2008 at 01:05 PM
oh come on.........for Martha Stewart???????? The same Martha Stewart that served time in a federal prison??!!! How does Dale Earnhardt compare to Martha?

Posted by: VBush Location: MHCY on Aug 1, 2008 at 12:33 PM
First of all, lets get something straight...No sports figure is a hero, period. A HERO is someone who puts his own personal safety and well being on the line for the benefit of others. Being a famous sports figure does not qualify. With that said, if the people of Kannapolis wish to honor a deceased sports figure with flags in his or her hometown that is their prerogative. I don't think that the powers that be should remove those flags because a visitor might be offended. They are visitors, period. Why people continuously relocate only to attempt to make changes in the community to make things more like where they came from is beyond me. If things were so great where you came from, why did you move? 'When in Rome....do as the Romans do!' With that said, I would like to reiterate...Dale Earnhardt was a GREAT race car driver, but he was not a hero.

I'm agree 100% with the person that we would take down recognition of our Hero for fear me might upset a Felon.. What does that say about our state. Felons are more important than Hero's Now thats something North Carolins can boast about. Let's hear it for Heros.

Who's birth place is in Kannapolis? Dale. Well if some flags are dirty and torn you Can't replace them??? Martha needs to stay NY...

Her home town in NY doesn't like her either. They would not let her use the town name on her products. Kanappolis needs to get some new flags if those are dirty and torn.

It's nice that they'll honor a convicted felon by taking down a hero's flag.
