Vehicle Fire Spreads Threatening Nearby School

A ten acre fire had its sights set on a Roper Elementary school. It all started with a vehicle fire. Just before 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, a motorist driving a jeep experienced engine trouble and pulled over on the side of Highway 64. The Jeep quickly caught fire and the driver was unharmed. But despite all the weekend's rain, the dry grass caught fire on the roadside, starting a brush fire fanned by the wind, blowing straight for a local school full of kids. Thankfully though, firemen on the scene say the wind shifted and abated that problem. According to Washington County Fire Marshal Lyman Mayo, the wind shifted 180 degrees, just a couple hundred of yards from the school.
