It's called "Buck the Lottery," and it's a movement just getting started at one Edgecombe County Church.
Pastor Bob Boone of Webb's Chapel Baptist Church in MacClesfield started the idea. He started by asking his congregation to donate at least $12, or a dollar a month for a year, to any school of their choice. Boone then takes all the money and sends it directly to that school to use as they see fit. Boone says that way schools get direct benefit of the donations, and no one has to buy a lottery ticket to do it.
Boone also says he's going to ask the board of directors of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina to endorse the concept. Boone's congregation alone raised nearly $300 in one weekend.
