One unidentified man died on the beach, and rescuers pulled 72 people from the surf along the northern Outer Banks as strong rip currents made swimming treacherous.

The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reported that Duck Surf Rescue
Manager Mirek Dabowski said beaches were crowded on the six miles
of shoreline his personnel covers. He said that of the estimated
5,000 people on the beach on Thursday, up to 1,000 went in the
water.

Dabowski also said there were at least another 2,200 beachgoers
on the four miles of Southern Shores that Duck covers, which
accounted for 13 of the rescues.

Dabowski said it wasn't clear if the one death was swimming
related.

Nags Head Ocean Rescue helped 13 people from the water Thursday
and decided to post warning flags.

Water can be very dangerous. Red flags are posted for a reason. Be careful. Mother Nature has no favorites!!! This is about as sad as all the cars I saw on the side of the road this past weekend _ STUCK IN THE SAND! Don't drive your cars in sand you will get stuck. Don't swim with red flag alerts--warning! DANGER~!!!

I'll bet you a study of the ZIP codes of those pulled from water would explain a lot.

I can imagine most if not at least half of these rescues were of people who don't know how to set themselves a limit in distance from the shoreline. I have seen many people go out so far that I could barely see them. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to take precautions when swimming in the ocean. I have seen people suck down beer after beer and then go into the water without floatation devices and wound up being rescued luckily by a lifeguard who was nearby. Use common sense and your swimming trip will be a good one! Our beaches on the OBX are signed all over about rip currents. Even the sides of lifeguard stands are posted with water hazards. READ THEM!!
