A Martin County man died in his home Wednesday afternoon when a fire swept through his residence in Williamston. The death of 81-year-old Jerome Aikens is still being investigated. Fire officials don't know for sure the cause of death and say the house did have working smoke detectors. A passerby spotted smoke coming from the home just after 6:00 Wednesday morning and alerted authorities. Fire officials say foul play has been ruled out, but the final cause of the blaze has still not been determined. Aikens was an active member of the Martin County Senior Center. He was three weeks shy of his 82nd birthday. If you would like to learn more about fire safety, escape plans and what to do after a fire, log onto this website: http://www.firesafety.gov/
