Keeping water and air clean while protecting land for hunting, fishing and hiking is the goal of a historic timberland agreement affecting North Carolina and nine other states.
North Carolina will buy 77,000 acres from International Paper along the Roanoke, Chowan and upper Tar Rivers for $80,000,000. Governor Easley says the purchase will give the state more control over the land.
In all, the company is selling 218,000 acres.
