Rough surf conditions Saturday on Hatteras Island cost the life of a Maryland man. The National Park Service says 40-year-old Marcus Paige from Hyatesville, Maryland drowned while surfing at the former site of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, a popular site.
Officials say it happened just after 11 a.m. An off-duty ranger and a local surfer from Buxton saw Paige's board floating by itself and fought the waves to investigate. They found Paige's body and brought him ashore and began C.P.R., but he was pronounced dead at Avon Medical Clinic.
