Dare County Sheriff Rodney Midgett had the displeasure of leading an investigation into former Southern Shores police chief Ted Brazell, a fellow professional who's crimes surfaced two years after he resigned as chief in 2002. According to Midgett, a woman came forward after becoming an adult, claiming Brazell had sexually abused her since the age of 13. Brazell had faced felony statutory rape, but as a part of a plea agreement, Brazell pled guilty to three counts of indecent liberties in Dare County Superior court. Brazell will serve up to 16 months in prison and then possibly be subject to five years probation.
